Understanding Meta Conversation-Based Charges

Meta charges for the WhatsApp Business API based on 24-hour conversation sessions. Conversations are split into 4 distinct categories:

  • Marketing Conversations: Initiated by the business to send promotional offers, discount codes, or products catalog.
  • Utility Conversations: Initiated by the business to deliver transactional updates, post-purchase notifications, or delivery alerts.
  • Authentication Conversations: Initiated by the business to send secure, template-locked OTPs for verification.
  • Service Conversations: Initiated by the customer. Any conversation started in response to a customer query is billed at service conversation rates.
Note: Every WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) gets 1,000 FREE Service Conversations per month, provided by Meta. All conversation fees are billed based on standard Meta region pricing.
